How Families Can Help

HOW CAN YOU HELP??

Help your child “juggle” a busy schedule of activities: 1 ½-2 hours of homework, phone and computer time, music, sports, and total relaxation time.

·       Grab ANY opportunity for casual conversation 8272007_120837_1.bmp and sharing.

·       Ask how you can support him/her in school work, and try to follow the requests.  This helps the student become an “independent learner”.

·       Make sure your child has quiet time and a place for homework.

·       Grab ANY opportunity to develop and challenge thinking skills.  You might play word games, work logic puzzles, discuss current events, or read together.  Ask for “supporting evidence” (a core skill this year) for “global” statements.  Ex:  “EVERYBODY is going”. .  . or “You NEVER let me . . . .”

·       Encourage and support reading of all kinds.

·       Encourage kids to ask us for help from us.  Extra help is available 2 or 3 times a week from all of us. Specific days are noted weekly on the board in each teacher’s room each week.

·       Expect student to use the plan book and keep neat, organized binders.

·       Call or email us if you sense “more than the usual” frustration.  We will be in touch with you if we have specific concerns.

·       Set healthy sleep and eating expectations.

·       Monitor internet use.  Help your child learn the strategies to be safe.

·       Give as much specific positive reinforcement as possible. Cherish the moments!

Ending comments:

* Kids at this age, as you know and can tell by the poems and the lists in our rooms, can be endearing, self-centered, diffident, inquisitive, tempestuous, tranquil, magnanimous, and definitely unpredictable.

* Think about this:  They might describe us (and you!) in the same way!
