WRITING PROCESS -- An Overview
PREWRITING (Brainstorming/Generating Ideas)
Prepare: Gather lots of ideas, words, and information to use in your writing. Jot them down.
PLANNING (organizing)
Focus: What is your purpose for writing? to explain? to persuade? to entertain?
Who will read your writing? (audience)
Organize your writing: web or outline, keeping audience and purpose in mind.
DRAFTING
Write: Draft your ideas out on paper or on the computer, keeping your plan in mind.
Skip lines or double space to leave room for changes.
Write on one side only of notebook paper.
REVISING
Read your draft aloud.
Does it say what you want it to say in the best way possible?
Make changes to improve what you are saying (content) & how you are saying it (style); pay close attention to Focus Correction Areas (FCAs)
EDITING & PROOFREADING
Review your draft and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors.
Pay close attention to Focus Areas.
FINAL PAPERS
Word processed or pen (blue or black).
Write on every line.
Very neat (no “cross-outs”; little white-out).
**Refer to Handbook Section of Writer’s Craft and to Write Source for hints and explanations. They are wonderful resources.
