For each night’s reading assignment,* you will respond to three of the prompts below. You may handwrite (as long as your writing is legible) in a journal/notebook or word process your entries.
You should bring your log each day; we may use it in class. I will collect the log four times during the reading—I will tell you ahead of time when I will be collecting it.
Format:
First, clearly label each entry with the act and scene number.
Then, respond to three of the following:
1. Comment on what you think is the significance of the scene. What would the play be like without it?
2. Ask one of the characters in the scene a question about something that confuses you, and try to answer it in his or her voice.
3. Quote lines from the scene that interests you and comment on them.
4. Describe your reactions to a character, action or idea that appears in the scene.
5. Discuss the relationships characters have to one another, quoting specific words or phrases to give evidence for your opinion.
6. Pretend you are an actor playing one of the characters in the scene. Get inside that character’s mind. Tell how the character feels about herself/himself, about other characters, about the situation of the scene.
Each of the three nightly entries should be at least five to ten sentences. Grades will be based on the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your responses. The log will count as a 100 point writing grade.
*You will have different instructions for the log for Act 4, but that log will be included in the 100 point writing grade.
