990 Initiative

The Department of Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts mandates 990 hours of structured learning time for each secondary school student every year. Acton-Boxborough students are required to create a 990 hour learning plan for each academic year. The plan is submitted during the course selection process in the spring and consists primarily of coursework and directed studies. A limited number of co-curricular activities and research endeavors may be incorporated in the plan for students in grades 10-12 with an approved application. Applications and lists of approved activities are available in the Counseling Center. If changes in individual plans occur throughout the year, students make adjustments with appropriate forms in the Counseling Center.  All entering freshmen meet the 990 requirement during regular school hours through coursework and directed study periods. No 990 plan is required for entering freshmen. Contact Mrs. Kunz in the Administrative Office for more information.
