Third Quarter Project assignment

  • --  GREEN SCIENCE
UNIT  1  PROJECT
Due Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Your project is 25% of your marking period grade.
You have chosen an organ system for your project. This is a project which may be done by an individual or by a group of two, maximum three, students.

All groups regardless of size will write an original report on the organ system and make a poster clearly displaying the important parts of the organ system and how it works together with other organ systems.
In addition to the above, groups with two students must hand in two of the items on the following list and groups of three students must hand in three of the items on the following list:

--A PowerPoint presentation describing the organ system and concentrating on the key information in the report.
-- Prepare a quiz (with separate answer key) for use to test the class on the organ system.
--A T-shirt that accurately places the parts of the organ system in relation to where they are found in the body.
--A three dimensional model of the organ system or the major organ in the organ system with a cutout view of the inner workings of that organ.

Your report must include:       The location of the major parts of the organ system in the body.
How the organ system operates and its function in the body (how does it help the body work)
What are the key parts of the organ system, and do they have special ways of working.
How does the organ system work with other organ systems in the body?
What are the major ‘breakdowns’ or diseases of the organ system?  (Additional questions attached)

The report must be at least 2 FULL pages long without pictures (the poster will serve as the picture),  and no more than 4 pages long. The report must be typed in “Times New Roman” font, size 12 and double spaced with margins of 1 inch. There can be no ‘cut and paste’ from sources, or any other form of plagiarism in the writing and sources of pictures must be shown. Grammar and spelling count on the project.  Alternate fonts will only be considered if a sample id provided for approval.
The poster will show the organ, where it fits in the total body system, and any unique or distinctive parts of the organ. All important parts must be labeled. At least 50% of the poster will be art work, not text.  Text on the poster will take up less than 20% of the poster and will be to provide information describing the design and operation of the organ and pointing out important functions of the organ parts shown. Most of the information on the poster should not be taken directly from the report, but should enhance the drawing or illustration by indicating the special function the organ performs.

You will be graded on the report, and the poster content.  If you are working in a group of two or three, the additional items will be graded and all grades will be added together and averaged for the project grade..

You must use at least 5 different sources for your information 2 sources must be from books in the library at school. You must provide a bibliography of all your sources and include it at the end of your written report.  Use the instructions from Write Source 2000 pages 230 – 232.
