After an hour delay due to the Boston Latin bus breaking down, the game between Acton-Boxborough and Boston Latin finally kicked off. The Colonials got right after it. It took only seconds for Nolan Condron to burst down the right side to cross for Eliot Conwill at the far post. His redirection of the low cross was blocked at the near post. The ball quickly found it's way back to Condron who this time chose to serve in the air for a streaking Conwill at the near post. His strong header, after cutting in front of the defender, glanced off the crossbar. Boston Latin was unprepared for the pace of the game given their short warm up time but it did not take them long to find their legs. In their first meaningful foray into the AB end, Boston Latin found the go ahead goal. A Latin player picked up a
ball in midfield and drove towards the AB defense. He played a ball out to the right that was driven towards the far post. The usually steady AB defense was not as organized as it could have been on the cross, leaving a Latin player open at the far post to head across the goal for a teammate to tap the ball in.
It took a few minutes for AB to recover from conceding this type of goal against the run of play. They consistently left the Boston Latin players too much space to operate. When the AB players did gain possession and play the ball forwards there was little support because of their deep lying position. As the half wore on, they slowly moved forward as a coordinated group and began to mount the pressure on Latin. The breakthrough would come in the 31st minute. Tom Meagher sent a long throw in from the left side deep into the Latin penalty area. Jeremy Bloomstone was unmarked at the near post to head past the helpless goalkeeper with some authority. Five minutes later the Colonials would take a lead that they would not relinquish. A long ball out of the back from Chris Li caught the Latin defense
too far up the field. Eliot Conwill battled with his marker and forced the defender to make a desperate clearance attempt which would glide past the goalkeeper for a forced own goal.
The Colonials kept up the pressure in the second half. Conwill had a beautiful diving header saved by the Latin goalkeeper down to his left only 5 minutes into the half. Conwill would snap another header just over the bar after a nifty move down the left side. Chris Li played a diagonal entry pass to Condron who laid the ball back to Oliver Davis to serve first time into the box. Chris Li popped up in the attacking third again when he pounced on a loose ball inside the Boston Latin box to slam home the third goal from 3 yards out on the right side. The game would be put further out of reach when Condron ran onto a free kick from Dillon Meagher in the 60th minute. Condron controlled with his chest while he was moving diagonally from left to right. His next touch took him past his defender which gave
him enough space to drill a low shot past the goalkeeper to the far post from a tight angle. The Colonials began to stroke the ball around and created several opportunities to extend the lead. Igor Rodrigues saw his header from a cross by Condron sail just wide of the left post. Jose Chacon had two good scoring chances in two minutes. He got on the end of a super cross from Ben Rosenfield but was unable to get the ball out of his feet in time to find the net. Chris Li found a wide open Chacon twelve yards out at the right post. Chacon took the volley well but he agonizingly watched his effort carom off of the crossbar.
AB responded well to giving up the early goal. Their next game against Waltham should provide a tough test in the Colonials' young season.
