The final scoreline was flattering for the Colonials as it took a true team effort to grind out the win over a gritty Newton South team. Nolan Condron made AB's intentions known in the early going. He latched onto a dangerous ball over the top of the Newton South defense, who played a dangerously high line. He beat the keeper to the ball but his first time lob from 20 yards out on the right side bounced just wide of the goal.
The Colonials stuck with the attacking trend and were able to break down South through some tidy passing and finishing in the 10th minute. Eliot Conwill received a ball 35 yards out from goal with little pressure from the defense. He was able to turn and play Seth Davis Brown in behind the right side of the Newton South defense. Davis Brown took a touch with his left foot and used his next touch to drive the ball inside the far post for the opening goal.
Three minutes later Conwill and Davis Brown teamed up again to produce a quality chance. This time it was Davis Brown, whose quick footwork on the left freed himself to square across to Conwill who had broken in behind the Newton South defense on the edge of the area. Conwill took one touch to steady himself but was unable to get a shot off quickly enough. Conwill had another opportunity from the resulting corner that was played to him at the near post from the right side which was blocked by the South defender.
After allowing conceding on one of the two chances they provided Newton South in the first half, the Colonials went into the break tied 1-1 and vowed to keep a clean sheet for the second half. South had a bit of the territory but never troubled AB goalkeeper, Alex Li. It was only a matter of time before the Colonials would break the deadlock. Jose Chacon would score his first Colonial goal in the 65th minute which would also prove to be the game winner. Peter Kollm stepped in to win the ball just inside his own half on the right side. He sent a high ball over the top of the South defense to Chacon who had timed his run to perfection. Chacon took a touch with his chest and then lobbed the goalkeeper who had come off his line to try to get to the ball first. The ball nestled into the back of the net to
give the Colonails a lead that they would not relinquish.
Newton South rallied in the waning minutes which left themselves vulnerable in the back. Igor Rodrigues put the game out of reach with his breakaway goal 2 minutes from time. David Lush drew in two defenders before wriggling past them 10 yards in his own half. He played a measured ball through to Rodrigues who only had the keeper to beat. He took a touch to his right which got the keeper's feet moving before pushing the ball over his left shoulder and into the back of the net.
Chacon would cap off a two goal performance with a tap in with under minutes to play. Oliver Davis did most of the work in the left side corner. He was holding onto the ball, trying to run down the clock. As he neared the corner flag and ran out of room he turned his defender, pushed the ball between the legs of the next defender and struck a low cross across the face of goal. Chacon lifted the ball over the goalkeeper for his second.
