The 5-1 scoreline against a solid Waltham team can be a bit deceiving. Acton-Boxborough was efficient with their chances, especially against Waltham's inexperienced backup goalkeeper, but they also had to absorb long stretches of Waltham possession. Even with the score at 3-0 AB did not appear to have a strong grip on the game. Waltham did not get behind the Acton-Boxborough back four very often, however, when AB won the ball possession was given away after one or two passes. After the Colonials conceded a needless penalty 12 minutes into the second half, Waltham pounced at the opportunity to get themselves back into the game. The Colonials kickoff went backwards, against the recommendation of their coach, and was subsequently passed out of bounds. The ensuing throw in saw a Waltham player get in behind the
AB defense. The players seemed to think that the play was offside but the whistle was never blown as the ball was squared across the face of goal to a wide open player six yards out from goal on the far post. Fortunately for the Colonials the first time shot was scuffed wide. Had Waltham pulled themselves back to 3-2, Acton-Boxborough would have had quite the fight on their hands to keep or extend their lead.
After absorbing several minutes of Waltham pressure as a result of the momentum swing due to the goal, the Colonials responded positively by getting a good look at goal. Jeremy Bloomstone fed Eliot Conwill in the right side channel about 20 yards from goal. Conwill's touch brought him into the penalty area and across his defender towards the inside. He stroked the ball with his left foot but the goalkeeper came off his line well to snuff out the shot. The game was essentially over when Max Kashin scored his second goal of the day to make the score 4-1. David Lush took a short corner from the right and delivered the ball to the far post. Kashin was given enough room to control the ball with his right foot despite the presence of 3 Walham defenders. He calmly faked his shot and put the ball on his left
foot to poke home from close range with 16 minutes to go. Lush tacked on the 5th goal two minutes later after a Waltham time out. Lush won the ball in his own half on the left side. He played forward to Peter Kollm who made a strong run down the left and served the ball across to Jose Chacon in the box. Chacon took a touch to steady himself but saw his close range shot carom off of the goalkeeper. The rebound fell right to Lush who finished off the play that he started.
The first half goals came from Seth Davis Brown, Kashin and Conwill. Dan Abbate fed Davis Brown who was moving from left to right about 30 yards out from goal. He got himself a small window to shoot and unleashed a bomb that dinged off the left post for the lead in the 13th minute. Igor Rodrigues would combine with Kashin to take advantage of a Waltham miscue in the back. A ball over the top forced the Waltham keeper to come off his line. The Waltham defender got to the ball first and tried to head it back to his teammate but the ball squirted past the goalkeeper. Rodriges was first to the ball on the left side. His angle was poor so he chose to cut the ball back and roll the all across the goal for a streaking Kashin who had the easiest of tap ins. It looked like AB would take a 2-0 lead into the
half before Conwill pipped in front of his marker to give the Colonials a 3 goal lead right on the stroke of half time. Oliver Davis took a quick free kick to his right to Davis Brown who beat a player before serving into the box. His pass was deflected and was first reached by Conwill who got his well deserved first goal of the season.
