The Colonials battled to a well deserved 2-0 win over visiting Wayland on second half goals from Oliver Davis and Tom Meagher. The opening scoring sequence began from a long throw from the right side from T. Meagher. The ball deflected off several players a few yards in front of goal before dropping for Davis on the right side. He still had some work to do as he stretched to get his right foot on the ball to direct it into the far post. T. Meagher would put the game out of reach with 9 minutes left to go. He pulled away from the scrum in front of goal following a corner kick from the right side. The ball was partially cleared just to the top of the box in the center of the goal. The bouncing ball was expertly sized up by Meagher as he thundered his right footed volley inside the top left corner for a
stunning second goal.
The outcome of the game was almost tilted in favor of the Colonials. Wayland got 9 or 10 players behind the ball whenever they could and they tried to clog the midfield. AB controlled most of the play but they found it difficult to break down the packed in defense but there were a few chances to take a first half lead. Matt Doelp easily read a Wayland attacker as he cut in to win the ball. He played a simple pass to release Nolan Condron down the right side. Condron skated past two Warrior defenders before unleashing a blistering shot that went straight at the goalkeeper. Throughout the first half the tempo of play from the Colonials was too slow to shift the Wayland defense. Davis combined neatly with Eliot Conwill to spring Nolan Condron down the left side with 5 minutes to go in the half.
Condron juked his way around his defender towards the end line. His right footed shot beat the goalkeeper at the near post but hit the upright and fell harmlessly out of bounds. Conwill would set up David Lush with less than a minute to go in the half. Conwill was running along the edge of the penalty box from left to right. His first time back heel gave Lush a clean look at goal but his left footed shot did not have enough on it to beat the keeper.
Just two minutes before scoring the opening goal, Dan Abbate made a solid angled pass to Condron on the left. His first touch beat his defender. His second touch was a driven ball on the ground towards the near post. Conwill met the cross with vigor but his effort fizzed just past the near post. Following Davis' goal, Wayland put the Colonials under a tremendous amount of pressure. AB waited too long to get organized for a few restarts and nearly paid the price as they were beaten to the ball on several occasions. They also conceded too many free kicks in their own half of the field while protecting their one goal lead. Alex Green made a big time save to preserve the one goal lead. A Wayland player drilled a left footed volley towards the lower right corner following a poor clearance from the AB
defense. Green's footwork was perfect as he flung himself towards the shot to steer the ball around the right post. Green also made an excellent stop to preserve the first shutout of his career. A long range Wayland shot dipped and swerved from right to left. Green took a step towards his left but had to readjust to the wicked movement on the ball. He parried the ball down and then pounced on the rebound to keep the scoreline at 2-0.
