MASSACHUSETTS CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARD
Each spring, the winner of the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award is selected from a list of twenty-five nominated books. The nominees are selected by a committee of teachers and librarians on the basis of both their literary merit and their appeal to children. The actual winner of the award is selected not by the committee but by the consumers – the kids! Participation is coordinated through school libraries. Again this year, our fifth and sixth graders had the opportunity to help choose the winner. Any Conant fifth or sixth grade student who read five or more of the nominated books was able to vote during the first week in March. We are happy to say that eighty-two of our students voted! Among them were seven students who read all 25 of the nominated books!
The winners of the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award were announced in early April. The First Place Winner is The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. The four Honor Books are Double Identity by Magaret Peterson Haddix, H.I.V.E. (Higher Institute for Villainous Education) by Mark Walden, The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman, and Miracle on 49th Street by Mike Lupica. If your fifth or sixth grader is looking for a good book to read over the summer, try one of these!
