Math  Guidelines                Ms. Kelly               7 Orange

Textbook
Glencoe Pre-Algebra, c. 2008            Web-site: www.pre-alg.com.
Choose the edition on the right with the picture of the Space Needle.
Access code for on-line textbook:  F8116331D0

There are a lot of resources on this site.  Be aware that tests and quizzes will be based on the skills and concepts that I stress.  You can identify these through homework assignments and classwork.
Thus, taking an on-line test may not be a true reflection of my test or quiz.
See my handout “How to Study for a Math Test”(in student’s notebook and on my website).

Extra Help
Extra help is usually available 2 days per week (Tues, Wed, or Thurs) from 2:15-3:00.
Days for the current week and the following week are listed on the HW board and my website.
If you are unable to attend these times, set up an appointment with me for lunch or before school.

To utilize this time efficiently for all students needing help, follow these guidelines:
-> Arrive on time (unless you have spoken to me).
-> Come prepared with math notebook, calculator if needed, pencil or pen.
-> Extra help sessions will typically be based upon the homework items you have
                noted as causing difficulty.

Homework Correction Symbols
Homework from the book should include your name, T, and the lesson number.
Correct using a colored pen that is not blue or black.
Include the correct answer beside any problem that you got wrong.
After correcting, you should put the number wrong at the top.
After correcting, start redoing the problems that you got wrong.

While doing your homework:

H       I got  help with this problem.

?       I tried but I’m not sure it’s done correctly.  I may need help.

I tried but I have no idea how to do this correctly.  I definitely need help.

While correcting your homework:

                Correct.

X              Wrong.

ok X            I understand why this is wrong.  I can do it now.

?X              I think I understand but I’m not confident I could do a similar problem .

X             I need to get extra help on this kind of problem.
Grading Policy

Tests count twice as much as quizzes.
Homework counts as a quiz grade.

Homework must be completed and in class on the due date to receive full credit.
*Do not skip a problem, show some attempt.
*Show work as needed, even if you use a calculator.
Problems from the book that require work are bolded on the HW sheet.
*One homework per term may be turned in late for full credit.
After one late assignment, you will earn half credit.
Late homework should be turned in the next class unless you have received
an extension from me.

Math Notebook Organization

You need a 3-ring binder for math.  You should share this binder with Science.
We empty it out each chapter so it does not get too large.
Use 6 dividers labeled as follows:
        Math Notes
        Math Worksheets
        Math Bookwork
        Math Tests and Quizzes
        Math Problem Solving
        Math Miscellaneous

If You’re Absent

1) The first day you are back from an absence, get your “T’s”  planbook located in the corner behind the door.  Write in your planbook what you missed.

2)  Pick up any worksheets from the appropriate bin.  Arrange to take a missed quiz or test, or to get extra help on the material covered while you were absent.

3) Borrow notes from a classmate or borrow my transparencies from the correct tray.

4) Be sure to complete, correct, and show me both the homework that was due the day you were absent and the homework that was assigned the day you were absent.

Ms. Kelly’s Web Site:  http://mail.ab.mec.edu/~jkelly/

My web site contains the following information:
-       date of next test or quiz
-       upcoming extra help days
-       list of homework problems from each lesson of the current chapter

My web site does not contain the specific assignment for each night.
Call a classmate to get the assignment if you are absent.
