Novel to Movie Project
Due Dates:
Outline For Novel to Movie Project due Thurs., May 1 Click here for outline form.
Completed project due Tues., May 6

Assignment: Pretend that a movie version of your book is about to be produced.   Your agent has gotten you a five minute interview with the producers of the movie.  You will submit a proposal for one of the following and sell the producers (our class) on your idea.  The focus of your presentation is to convince the producers that your idea fits the book and would make an important contribution to the movie version.  You should come to the interview with a visual (with the title of the book, the author and your name) and a well-prepared oral presentation for the producers.  (You will also hand-in the outline of the presentation.  See FCAs for specifics.) Remember you need to really sell your idea in your presentation.

Design a movie set
-- Recreate an important setting from the book and sell your idea to the producers.  You will need to build a model of your set (a small diorama ) or draw a detailed plan and prepare a short presentation that explains the connection between the diorama and the setting as described in the novel.

Design the costumes for the main characters -- Create costumes for the main characters and sell your idea to the producers.  You will need to dress models to show us or draw sketches and prepare a short presentation that explains the connection between the costumes and the descriptions in the novel.

Cast the major characters in your novel with well-known actors -- cast the main characters with well known actors and sell your idea to the producers.  You will need to present the audience with a visual representation of each actor and prepare a short presentation that explains the connection between the actors (their past experience, their way of acting, etc.) and the descriptions of characters in the novel.

Audition for a part in the movie
-- write a script for yourself, dress in character, and show the producers how you would play the part.  You will need to present the audience with a vivid characterization of the person you will play, and prepare a short presentation that explains the connection between your portrayal of the character and the character as the author portrays him/her.

Plan the music for the production -- Match 3-5 pieces of music to the action of the novel.  You will need to play clips of each musical piece, explain which event the music would be played for, and prepare a short presentation that describes the music and explains the connection between the music and the event in the novel.  For a visual you will want to create a chart of the music=scene (your visual grade will primarily be based on creative use of music; well timed clips; well prepared cue-up etc.)

Sell your directing abilities -- Create a play or video of an event in the book that will illustrate how you would direct the action.  You will need to produce a short video or live presentation of your play and write a short presentation that explains the connection between your direction of the action in the video
or play and the action in the novel. (This is a very challenging option!)
