April 25, 2008

Welcome to the Fifth Grade Web Page.

This is a good place to keep up with events and news concerning your fifth grader.  We'll be taking our April vacation from Saturday April 19 through Sunday April 27. Have a restful, fun-filled vacation.

Spring is upon us now. Students in MAB's class (soon to be joined by Tom and Alyson students) have been cleaning up the Outdoor Classroom. The Acton Garden Club presented the group with a check for $365 to help fund the purchase of gardening gloves, small tools, bird and butterfly attracting plants, and the start of some plans for a Japanese garden.  Take a look next time you get a chance. The Outdoor Classroom is between the old Merriam School and the new Parker Damon Building.

Fifth grade students are in the midst of an Oregon Trail simulation game, studying the human transport systems, finishing up their American History research papers, preparing their RP character role plays, working on decimals, percents, and fractions, and preparing some May and June programs for family and fellow students.

Research Paper Envelopes:  Students who have not finished their Research Papers must bring in their Research Paper envelope including their outline, work cited cards, and note cards every day to class (and then back home to work on at home) every day.  Research Paper information, assignments, and Step-By Step directions are all available here on the fifth grade web site under “Language Arts.”

Research Paper: Most children in most classes have completed or are just about to finish their Research Papers. Now the final part of the project will be prepared this week — the Role Play.  If parents/ families get a chance, they could help with any costume pieces or props.

"Steps to Respect"

Children in the fifth grade have started a 3 session program that is called “Steps to Respect.” Carolyn Imperato came in for the first session just before vacation.  She will be returning next week for two more sessions. The objective of the sessions is to have children recognize bullying (face to face and behind the back), How to deal with put downs and how to refuse bullying.

Wizard of Oz: In MAB’s room we are working on a classroom production of the Wizard of Oz. Parts have been assigned and sets, set pieces,  costumes, and props are all being discussed.  We cannot do this alone.  We need parents to help us with costumes and sets/set pieces.  For instance, we have 4 Dorothies, who need to have the same type of dress, 2 lions, 2 scarecrows, and 2 tin woodmen who all need similar costumes.  We need a large refrigerator packing box to turn into Dorothy’s house.  ETC. ETC. ETC.  If you have a bit of grease paint in your blood and/or would like to become involved in this big project, please be in touch. We need you!

This is a time to check in with your kids about their school days and find out how much they are learning. Be in touch if you have questions,
