Homework
(NOTE: The intent of this page is to help parents and students keep track of monthly and re-curring assignments for planning purposes. It does not include daily assignments which can be found in the student's assignment notebook.)
Weekly Homework (may) includes:
* 3 books/3 cards (assigned by Mrs. Raffa and due monthly)- Students should be reading 30 min. each night.
* Daily math assignments (assigned by Mrs. Macey)
* Reading (assigned by Mrs. Meek)- We are currently doing literature circles with The Golden Goblet and The Egypt Game. Ask your son/daughter about what book they're reading! :)
*Science- Your son/daughter is participating in one of three units: The Scientific Method & Engineering, Energy, or Microworlds. Each unit lasts 7-8 weeks. Ask your student which science unit he/she is currently in.
Fridays * Word of the Week- (vocabulary/spelling) These always pertain directly to the current curriculum.
Weekly sign up * News Reports- Each week students select a day to present a news report to the class. Please see my PortaPortal for news sites (see 'button' above); OR students may use The Beacon, Boston Globe, New York Times... (Please no magazine articles.). Students should use the 'news report template' given in class. (This assignment must be pen/cursive, OR typed.)
Fridays * B.S.W. (Before School Work)- This is always given in the morning. It correlates with what we are doing in class and/or is a review or practice. Typically, it should be completed in school. Sometimes, however, students need to finish what they started at home.
Tests to study & prepare for:
Thursdays * Math- weekly review tests (monitors learning and readiness)
* Social Studies-
Fri. 12/18 * WOW test 2
Fri. 12/4 * Reading vocab. quiz #3 (the list of words will be assigned on Mon. 11/30)
Projects: (Students are always given at least 1 week or more for assigned projects.) We highly recommend students organize and plan out their time using the given calendar when the project is first assigned in order to avoid last minute stress!
Current Projects:
(The next project coming up is for science. It will be assigned mid-December.)
NOTE: In 6th grade students should not be spending more than 1 and 3/4 hours (student handbook) at most each night on homework. One of the many purposes of homework is to"develop good study habits and a sense of responsibility." (student handbook) Thus, it is important for students to learn how to manage and organize their time between homework AND life! This is one of the skills we try to
teach and reinforce in our 6th grade classes. Click the link below for some helpful homework tips. For more help and suggestions in this area please contact your child's homeroom teacher.
