Greetings First Grade Families,

        Happy Halloween!
Here is a list of some of the things your first grader is working on:
* In math we are learning to show numbers on a ten-frame and find parts of ten.
*In writing we are learning how to write "Small Moments" from our lives.
*In reading we are learning strategies to be more accurate in our reading. The strategies thus far are
        # use the pictures
        # check the beginning and ending sounds
        # sound the letters out
#tap the words when the reading "sounds" wrong
#skip the tricky word, finish the sentence, and start the sentence again.
*For word study have worked on three short vowels so far and will be learning to read and spell words with "ng" and "nk" this week.
Don't forget that we teachers have a professional development day this coming Tuesday and there will be no school for students.
If you have concerns or questions please let me know. Send a note in with your child and I will try to respond as soon as I can. I don't always get to check my email during the day so a phone call or note works best if I need to know information for the day.

Sincerely,

Nancy

Reading on-line
Here is a great site. It has leveled books from level A to Z. The site does cost money but children improve their reading skills by:
Listening for modeled fluency, reading for practice,
recording their reading, and checking comprehension with quizzes.
You can ive it a try for free.
